Brilliant concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach, including the world-famous Concerto for two violins in D Minor, will be played in the baroque Epiphany Chapel (kaple Zjevení Páně) in Smiřice during the opening concert of the 13th annual Smiřice Music Festival in 2016. Along with Jaroslav Svěcený, two other great soloists will be playing – the American music teacher and violinist, Stephen Shipps, and oboe player, Zdeněk Rys. Together with the Virtuosi Pragenses chamber orchestra, they will create a festive atmosphere for the opening concert.

A Chamber Session in Smiřice

The combination of violin, viola and piano has always tempted world-famous composers to create unique repertoire. Jaroslav Svěcený, in cooperation with violist Jitka Hosprová and the ever brilliant piano player, Václav Mácha, will enable the audience to immerse themselves in these musical gems. The experience will be intensified by the magical atmosphere of the chateau chapel.

SThe combination of chanson and the spoken word is also a novelty within the festival. This evening will feature the legendary Czech actress, Simona Postlerová, and young chanson singer, Dáša Zázvůrková, who – along with the festival’s frequent guest, Pavel Větrovec – will create a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

A Swing Encounter
Big band Václava Kozla

The most famous swing melodies played by the Big Band, whose founder is the brilliant composer, conductor and instrumentalist, Václav Kozel, which with its guest, Jaroslav Svěcený, will play in the Epiphany Chapel (kaple Zjevení Páně) for the very first time.

Baroque Easter in Smiřice

The leitmotif of this concert is not only the unique masterly instruments which will be presented by Jaroslav Svěcený in compositions from the 18th – 20th centuries, but also the virtuoso playing of one of the best Czech harpsichordists, Jitka Navrátilová, and organist Josef Kšica. The sound of the historical violins will be blended with the beautiful and full voice of young Czech mezzosoprano, Ester Paulů.

Smiřice Night Fairy-Tale

The legendary and lively lady, Soňa Červená, who can enthral any audience, will be performing at the Smiřice festival for the first time. Her partners on stage will be Jaroslav Svěcený and two accordion masters, Ladislav Horák, and his brilliant student and winner of many international competitions, Markéta Laštovičková.

One of the best contemporary Czech composers and arrangers, Jiří Škorpík, will be featured alongside the great young soprano, Markéta Mátlová, and violinist Jaroslav Svěcený in an original project which is sure to appeal to listeners of all generations. It will be recorded for a CD.

A wonderful story of a remarkable woman who became the head of the French Army fighting the English during the Hundred Years’ War. Her bravery and religious ardour were a thorn in the side of the men of power of that time. She was declared a heretic and burnt at the stake. Much later she was rehabilitated and became a martyr, and at the beginning of the last century she was sanctified. The stirring text will be recited by actress Jitka Sedláčková, accompanied by violinist Jaroslav Svěcený, organ player Josef Popelka and trumpet player Vladimír Rejlek.

10th concert, Sunday 27 March 2016 at 7 p.m.
Final Concert

BonArt Orchestra – chamber orchestra

The final concert will feature a purely female orchestra, whose members are also excellent soloists and chamber music players. The programme will focus on compositions by Antonio Vivaldi, Jan Václav Stamic and other 18th century composers. The Easter evening atmosphere, intensified by beautiful music, will be a fitting and festive ending of the 13th annual Smiřice Music Festival.
